13.3.09 - In memoriam Lars Estrand:
The great Swedish Vibraphonist Lars Erstrand passed away Wednesday the 11th of March after a long battle against cancer.
Born 1936 he was from the beginning very much influenced by his idol Lionel Hampton whom he later (early 90s) recorded with. Among other early sources for inspiration were Terry Gibbs and Milt Jackson. Through the years however he developed a very individual style of his own, including trademarks that meant that nobody could mistake him for somebody else. His long musical relationship with clarinetist Ove Lind was one of the most fruitful collaborations in the history of Swedish jazz. As a musician Lars belonged to the best in the world which was acknowledged by Benny Goodman after making appearances together in France. Lars was a great explorer of the American Song Book and I´m proud to have been on some of his recordings. Especially do I recall the CD “The Complete Songs” on Opus 3 where we played the verses to all songs recorded.
The passing of Lars Erstrand is a huge loss for Swedish jazz as well as for myself. He is now included in the quite long line of important Swedish jazz artists deceased recently. Arne Domnerus, Esbjörn Svensson, Putte Wickman  and Monica Zetterlund will  be joined by Lars somewhere hopefully.
(Jan Lundgren, Florence, march 13, 2009)

4.9.08 - Tribute to Arne Domnerus (1924 - 2008):
"Having worked with some great musicians through the years there is still nobody that had such an enormous emotional
impact on me as Arne. The secret was in his sound and in his way of nuancing each tone. As a jazz musician he reached a
whole nation of people. People who wouldn't normally listen to jazz included. He was loved by the audiences. Anyone with an interest in jazz should take a listen to "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", recorded in the 50s with Quincy Jones leading the Swedish Radio Big Band - a classic.
Arne was one of the world's finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook; but not only that, he was also one of the
pioneers in playing music of Swedish origin, popular songs and folk music, in a jazz context.
Arne Domnerus truly was one of the great ones and he will be missed by thousands of fans."
(Jan Lundgren)
